Oh My...

Do you know how it is when there's something that you don't want to look at too closely because you know it's not healthy?

It's that thing that will suck you in if you fall into its gravitation field and might never give you back. It's that thing that has been floating around for years, and whenever it ambles towards you, you yelp and jump and duck and hide under the table because you know it's NOT GOOD FOR YOU.

And then, one day, when you're unsuspectingly surfing the internet in your lunch break, wanting nothing more than a distraction as you can't leave the office because the rain is falling in sheets, you stumble into its pit that is filled with doom and destruction, and you know it's too late. You were weak for only one second, and that single second was enough.

Your world will never be the same. There are some things that can't be shaken off. They cling to you. They clutch your legs with their viscous claws, leaving marks upon the very core of your being. They stick to you, and they suck you dry like a leech gorging on a succulent lamb fresh out of the womb.

In other words: I discovered Etsy.

It's time for some Friday afternoon ranting.

This time, I'm not going to introduce a book that calls itself literature. It's urban fantasy, the first one in a series, and never claimed to be anything but a formula-style quick read. This means, I'm not going to complain about the lack of character development or style, or the ineffective use of language, even though you'll find it in heaps. I'm not even going to touch the idiotic views of the main character - because if well written, main characters with idiotic views are fun.

No. What I'm going to complain about is an author who tries to be funny and witty, and manages only to embarrass himself page after page.

Please do not click the link if you expect a well thought-out, unbiased critique.

Title: Lost in Reality - Part 9
Characters: George/Lee
Rating: This is a proud R for lots of touching
Word Count: ~6000
Summary: Reality is the state or quality of being real. But what is real? And more importantly, what is not real?

All credit goes to [livejournal.com profile] tree00faery and [livejournal.com profile] thimble_kiss for betaing this into submission. All remaining mistakes are my own.

Thank you to all who have been reading and cheering and are incredibly patient with me. There's one more part to go.

Gone. On. )

I'm in need of some ranting. That's reason enough to make you suffer and introduce you to ten books I really, really don't like.

Here's the first book. I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't share my opinion. This one won four prizes, among them the Booker Prize in 1997. You're welcome to rant right back at me.

Warning: Please don't click the cut if you expect a thoughtful critique.

Only that once again they broke the Love Laws. That lay down who should be loved. And how. And how much. )

I'm back, I'm tired, and strangely enough, work hasn't improved miraculously since last week - DESPITE me eating all Easter chocolate. How's that even fair?

On the upside, I still wasn't voted out of [livejournal.com profile] rw_ldws. Here are the ficlets of the last weeks.

Hope you are all well ♥ ♥ &hearts

I wish you all a great, relaxed and happy weekend whatever you're going to do and celebrate.

Apologies to all I've neglected in the last few weeks. It's been a bit of a rough ride here, but I'm hoping that things will calm down soon. I'll take the weekend off, leave my phone and computer at home and will spend Easter at my dad's. With my mum still in the clinic, he's not doing all that well, so I opted out of my vacation plans.

Nevertheless, it's four whole days of no work and chocolate eggs and sleeping long. I'll be around this evening (and hopefully finally getting the last sentences of my George/Lee WIP on paper), but from tomorrow morning until Monday evening, I won't be online or available per email.

Thank you so much for the lovely v-gifts, [livejournal.com profile] thimble_kiss and [livejournal.com profile] spn4ever. Those never fail to make me smile. ♥ ♥ ♥

Love and kisses to all of you. Have a great time.

This morning, I slept until nine, got up, took a shower, pulled on my holey denims and baggy t-shirt, and made myself a cup of coffee with loads of milk.

Then I thought to myself, "Might as well have a look what's going on in LJ land." I didn't have the time to do much reading lately, and getting lost in the anarchic part of the internet between friends and strangers and creativity sounds brilliant.

So I turned on my computer, added some sugar to my coffee because I'm just that frivolous, logged in, poked around, updated my stories-to-read-list, considered for the hundredth time taking over an abandoned newsletter but again postponed messaging the mod, and then- wait a moment...

seriously. wait a moment, it's good for building up tension. )

Thank you for all the love and lovely comments on my last post. It helped. You're all wonderful. ♥ ♥ ♥

Short update: My mum's still in the clinic, and I hope she's improving. I couldn't talk to her yet but talked to one of the doctors. The rest is still bugging me, but it's stuff I can deal with. I hope this week will be better.

Meme 1:
I like reading about people on my f-list. Sometimes there are things I'd love to know but don't dare to ask because it is too private, none of my business, or maybe I should already know. If there's anything you'd like to ask me, go ahead, I'll try to answer every question.

Meme 2:
1. Leave me a comment if you want to do the meme.
2. I'll reply with 6 of your icons and then you post this up and describe them!

[livejournal.com profile] thimble_kiss gave me those six icons to describe:

Ficlets

Jan. 28th, 2010 06:54 pm
seedee: (Default)
I've wanted to do another drabble post, similar to this one.

However, I saw that there's another quick round for Haiti going on. This time with LJ-gifts, which makes everything very easy and just a click away. From Thursday, January 28th, 4pm, through Saturday, January 30th, 3:59pm, PST, LJ will donate 100 percent of the proceeds from all vgift sales to CARE and UNICEF (they'll cover the credit card processing fees).

If anyone wants a ficlet of at least 500 words from me, leave a comment over there. I'll write for the absolute minimum of 1 LJ gift of 0.99$ - you can send it to whomever you want.

I am offering: 5 (EDIT: 2 are left) ficlets of at least 500 words

Fandoms (optional) (characters/ships): Harry Potter, Torchwood, Supernatural, Original. Anything goes. Gen, Het, Slash, any character, any pairing.

Additional Info (optional): Scenario, characters, genre, rating is all up to you. I'll write whatever you want to the best of my abilities. That includes sequels/missing moments/prequels to everything I've written so far, characters I don't like or kinks I'd not touch with a ten foot pole (And I so want to make a bad pun about a ten foot pole now).

Donation Minimum/Number of items offered: 1$. I'm cheap. This is not an auction, so the first 5 people to make an offer will get a fic. It would be lovely if you had more than 1$ but it's not required.

And here you can leave your offer.

HAPPY NEW YEAR to all of you. I came back today from my short trip and currently try to catch up. Let me know if I missed something.

Before reveals go up in several fests, I'd like to get in one more rec post, even though I still haven't read all bookmarked stories. Here are five of my favourites from five different fests:

Truth Beyond. Minerva/Rita. NC17.
I love this story for the way it handles the characters, the plotline, and for the way it is structured. There are very short sections with an alternating point of view. The two stories are very different, and yet they are the same. It's a very interesting piece of story telling.

By Any Other Name. Ginny/Blaise. Warnings: Implications of violence and rape (this is the author's warning; I think it's misleading. I'd say this is non-con even if it's not technically rape. Be warned!). Summary: Though she'd learned absolutely nothing else in the five months since starting her sixth year at Hogwarts, her various punishments had prepared her for this moment.

This was toeing my personal line. It wasn't an entirely comfortable read for me - which I suppose it wasn't intended to be - but it is well crafted and well executed. The reader is left in the dark about the motives behind the action. Black/white/grey, we don't know what's going on, but the author suggests many possibilities. I'm glad that I clicked it. Give it a go if sexual abuse isn't on your trigger or squick list.

Everything in this World Ron/Pansy. NC17. 21,000 words. Summary: Ron wakes up and the world is different.

The story is far shorter than the word count suggests - or at least it seems far shorter. The summary says all you need to know. Our Ron wakes up in a world that is very different. It's an AU, and yet it isn't. I fell in love with this Pansy, with Harry and Ginny, and with all those that were left behind. The author managed to create two versions of each character, even though we only meet one version per person. If you can spare the time, read it - no matter whether you like the pairing or not. It's worth it - and I don't say that lightly.

Meprishou. Harry/Ron. PG13. This is short, funny and wacky in a charming way. The question this story tries to answer is: Would anybody really miss the Channel Islands?

Thoughts on Time Travel. Gen story featuring Luna, Ron, George and Fred. This story does not have a summary (this seems to be a trend in this particular fest) - maybe one of the reasons it has hardly any comments? (This is a thinly veiled plea for authors to care for their headers. More often than not a good summary makes the difference between clicking and not clicking. Just saying.)

Nevertheless, this is a delightful short story. The narration is tight, and the dialogue spot on. The voices of all characters are different, sound real and are entertaining in a clever way. I'm very fond of this Luna who refuses to believe in time travel.
seedee: (Lee2)

I plan on making another rec post tomorrow. While there's not a lot to do, I'm still stuck at work today and tomorrow, probably until late. Then I'll be on holiday for a few days. Just in case I won't find the time to post, I wave goodbye until next week. Happy New Year to all of you! See you in January.

Title: Lost in Reality - Part 6
Characters: George, Lee
Rating: PG-13 for this part
Word Count: ~4000
Summary: Reality is the state or quality of being real. But what is real? And more importantly, what is not real?

It comes late, but here it is. Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] tania_sings for the beta work.
