Hello Everyone,
I hope you're doing fine on this lovely Wednesday morning (or whatever time it is in your time-zone).

Sadly,
hp_darkfest is over (booo). There were many great stories and art, and I'm going to rec my personal top five today. There are many more worth checking out. If you head over to
melusinahp, you'll find summaries of all the stories.
Erlestroke. NC 17. Warnings: rape, torture, extreme violence against a minor. I usually don't read stories that come with these warning. However, the summary made me curious: Erlestoke House of Corrections is a low security wizarding prison. It's not Azkaban, Draco Malfoy thinks when he's committed to serve his five months prison sentence there. But Erlestoke holds horrors that Azkaban doesn't know.
Add to this a well crafted header, a wordcount of 26,000, the label gen (Draco centric), and I wanted to know what this was about.
I'm so glad I did, because this is without a doubt the story I enjoyed most during the whole fest (and it kept me up far too long on a weekday.)
It is incredibly well crafted in terms of characterisation, plot, the raw reality of torture, and the blunt brutality it transports. There's no prettifying, no excuse, no trying to gloss over, and no healing cock. Someone knew what they were doing there. I strongly recommend reading, but be aware of the warnings and take them seriously.
A Tale of Seasons. R. Warnings: Torture (nothing too bad, though). The summary doesn't do it justice: Her master’s victory is nothing like Bellatrix hoped for. She lost everything, and even the Dark Lord has no more use for her. The only thing that is left to her is one prisoner.
This is another one that I read despite the pairing and warnings. Its strong point is the characterisation of Bellatrix and Neville in an AU world, where Neville lives as a prisoner in Bella's house. Bella has fallen from grace, and they form an odd bond. I really like this story; it's rare that Bella feels like a human being and still stays true to canon.
The Hex. Art. PG. Luna. No warnings. This is simply beautiful and only one little click away. Give it a go.
Nothing Will Happen. PG13. Warnings: Trauma. Summary: This is your dishonourable disaster, in the shape of a fairy tale come true.
Another gen piece. It tells the story of Tom Riddle, Sr. Even if you're not interested in the character, in Harry Potter or fanfiction in general, this is worth the read simply because of the beautiful language and refreshing POV.
Reaching Out. NC17. Remus/Sirius. Warnings: Heavy angst, abuse, dub-con bordering on rape, mental instability, canon character death, non-explicit and explicit sexual scenes. And summary of doom: When Sirius Black comes to live at Grimmauld Place and joins The Order, Remus could not be happier. He finally gets his long-lost lover back, and his life can go back to being the way it was during the happiest times of his life. But Remus soon discovers that the man he loved during his school years had not come back from Azkaban quite the same.
I'd say this is the darkest of the lot. A devastating piece about a Remus/Sirius relationship after Sirius's time in Azkaban. A wonderful read, but keep tissues, chocolate and a bunny to hug nearby.
That was it. Huge thanks to the mod for organising this fest so perfectly and elegantly. I'll post my story when reveals are up. A special thumbs up for creating a beautiful banner that does not break people's f-lists!
In the meantime (after successfully submitting my
hp_yule_balls story), I'm finally working on the next part of my George/Lee story. It's been long and I apologise to those who are following, but life kind of exploded all over me. But the pieces are swept under the rug, and I'm back at having some time for myself.

In fact, of the five Darkfest entries you recced, four are my favourites, as well.

on 2009-12-06 07:14 pm (UTC)I have to admit that our awesome mod saved me from that trap. I'm a huge H/D shipper, but not for this fic. :)
I have been imagining what would happen with Draco now. Perhaps it's stuff for a sequel.
Your tastes are excellent. :D So excellent in fact that I'd love to friend. May I? No need to refriend, of course.
