Three Things

Thank you for all the love and lovely comments on my last post. It helped. You're all wonderful. ♥ ♥ ♥

Short update: My mum's still in the clinic, and I hope she's improving. I couldn't talk to her yet but talked to one of the doctors. The rest is still bugging me, but it's stuff I can deal with. I hope this week will be better.

Meme 1:
I like reading about people on my f-list. Sometimes there are things I'd love to know but don't dare to ask because it is too private, none of my business, or maybe I should already know. If there's anything you'd like to ask me, go ahead, I'll try to answer every question.

Meme 2:
1. Leave me a comment if you want to do the meme.
2. I'll reply with 6 of your icons and then you post this up and describe them!

[livejournal.com profile] thimble_kiss gave me those six icons to describe:

Tinkerbell: This is Tinkerbell in one of her rare moments where she was caught not acting. She looks back over her shoulder at the director of the movie, thinking, "What the hell made you think this costume is a good idea?" I love the look on her face and it's my default icon.

Sheep: Sheep are awesome. I had five of them for years, but sadly, the last one, Lotta, died just a few months ago. They are amazing, cute animals, each having its own personality. Lotta was a nutter, and I loved her madly. Fun fact: I added this particular icon to my collection specifically for a conversation with beloved [livejournal.com profile] thimble_kiss.

Winter: This is a story icon. For most of my stories, I have icons. I used this one for Glimpses of Christmas, a Harry/Ron story told in ten drabbles. I'm still very fond of that short story, and of the icon as well - it always reminds me of one of my favourite poems: Robert Frost's Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening.

Goldfish: Ha! Miss Kiss knows exactly where that icon comes from. It's an icon I made for the RP community [livejournal.com profile] crossingsend where we're both players. I love that place because it's relaxed and laid back and free of pressure. Why a goldfish? Because goldfishes don't have hands to masturbate. Fun fact: There's a typo in the icon, but I deliberately never corrected it because it always makes me grin at myself.

Eat.Sleep.Read: That's my rec icon. I love the simplicity of it. The clear message is sexy.

Quäl Dich Du Sau!: Right. Before I attempt to translate it, let me tell you the story.

It's a quote and it was said in 1997 during the Tour de France. German racing cyclist Jan Ullrich was wearing yellow, meaning he was in the lead. It was a hard day for him. He was exhausted and tired, and the lead was shrinking. Udo Bölts, also member of the German team, realised that Ullrich was losing his drive. Bölts who was desperate to motivate Ullrich, finally yelled 'Quäl Dich, Du Sau!' A nearby microphone recorded it, Ullrich won, and what Bölts yelled exploded into an idiom. I hear and say it often, especially at the end of an eight hour ski day like last weekend, after carrying a heavy backpack for days and too many miles, or half an hour before I finally reach a summit.

I struggled with the translation and came up with: "Push through, bitch."
'Quäl dich' (literal translation is torture yourself) implies suffering in order to accomplish something, and 'Du Sau' is a vulgar expression that comes from a female pig, but doesn't have the same connotation as calling someone a 'pig' in English.

This is my favourite icon ever.

I'll play-- but my icons are not very exciting...

I have sucky icons, and I always forget to use them, but I'll play. ^_^

'Miss Kiss'! That made me melt. :) And now I know the reason for the goldfish – surprising, but sensible. *nods*

I had no idea about the typo, but now I can grin at your quirky German self along with you. Hee!

And thanks for the explanation of the German expression! Because of similarities to Norwegian words, I've always thought of it as 'Strangle yourself, you sheep'. (Sau is sheep in Norwegian.) (I did of course realise that it didn't mean that, but it sounds like that, in Norwegian. *g*) That is a fun story, by the way!

And speaking of sheep, it also makes me melt that you uploaded such an adorable icon to use with me! ♥

I do love your default icon – I love all of these, and countless of your other ones. You've got some of the best icons on my flist and are one of those I think of as having a unique icon 'style'. :)

Thanks for playing! ♥ And, oh, would you give me six of mine? I'll do the meme again here in your comments.
